Recant: To withdraw and renounce an opinion or statement

So, after due consideration (and watching WeCrashed) I recant and acknowledge that Jared Leto is an extremely gifted actor.

He is totally convincing as the serial entrepreneur, Adam Neumann, in this real life tale of the spectacular rise and fall of the property rental company, WeWork. It is as if Jared Leto channels the charismatic salesman rather than impersonates him – and his Israeli accent is also pretty perfect. 

Hiding behind a false paunch and prosthetics, Jared Leto was unrecognisable as Jenny’s husband, Paolo Gucci, in the House of Gucci film, but this does not in itself constitute a notable performance.  

So, while I recant my earlier rant about Jared Leto being a worthy recipient of the Razzie (for worst supporting actor) I now acknowledge that he was not to blame for the disastrous performance. 

The Golden Raspberry Award should have gone to whoever decided that House of Gucci needed a clown and that it would be Paolo Gucci… dare one whisper the name… Sir Ridley Scott ? 

And a final note for those who favour historical accuracy:  if anyone in the Gucci family at that time was considered a figure of fun, in truth it was Paolo’s uncle Rodolfo – played rather sedately in the film by Jeremy Irons.
